Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Informática

A brief history of the Polytechnic School

The Polytechnic School started in the semesters of 1966 to 1967 as part of the education given by the “Universidad Laboral de Alcalá”. At the beginning, studies such as Telecommunication Engineering (3 years' degree programme) in Electronic Equipments, Engineering in Industrial Electronics (3 years' degree programme) and Engineering in Topography were part of the teaching programme.

Although university teaching was not official, the academic activity was part of the Spanish Department of Education that had been established for each educational area. On the 4 th of August 1970 the General Law of Education recognized Electronic Equipments as a speciality. The development of this law permitted the integration of this School as a University School in the general academic system, connecting to the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

The Legal Statute 1138 of 30 th September of 1998 recognizes the Telecommunication Engineering University School connected to the University of Alcalá de Henares . The university moved its studies to a new campus building, which was constructed in record time of less than three months and which is now the head office of the studies for ten years.

In the Legal Statute 1049 of 27 th of July of 1990, the Telecommunication Engineering School was transformed in the Polytechnic University School and was authorized to organize the study programmes of Engineering in Electronic Equipments, which was traditionally taught, Engineering in Electricity (Industrial Electricity) and three years degree in Computer Engineering. Both of the newly established degrees were published according to the 8th September of 1992 and the 1 st of June of 1992 ruling.

In the study programme of 1993-94, the lectures started in order to obtain the degrees of Telecommunication Systems, Electronic Systems and Telematics. Likewise, in the study programme of 1994-95, a new degree in Industrial Engineering such as Industrial Electronics, Computer Engineering of Systems and in Computer Management was also established.

In the years 1996 and 1997, the School received a final boost with the beginning of two excellent engineering degrees belonging to the field of new technologies areas and related to the Technical Engineering courses that are already taught: These are Electronic Engineering and Telecommunication Engineering. Such teaching centres were established during the Franco regime which offered specialized career programmes to people with low income as an alternative to university studies.

The studies offered by the Polytechnic School was completed with Geodesy and Cartography Engineering (course 1995/96), Architecture (course 1999/00) and Computer Engineering (course 2001/02)

Thanks to these new secondary studies, the School was authorized to change its name to “ Polytechnic School ”.

An important landmark in the history of the School was the inauguration of the new Polytechnic building which is the current central office during the study programme of 1998/99. This building is a wonderful architectonic work carried out by the prominent architect Mr. Antonio Fernández Alba.

Its facilities have enabled the encouragement of a hardworking academic activity and research. Regarding the present status it could be seen as the consolidation of new teachings and an increasing work of research and collaboration with enterprises. This last aspect has been facilitated by the creation of 'Centro de Alta Tecnología y Homologación' (a centre of High Technology and official approvals) located in the same building and considered to be the centre of support for the research development departments.
